The Library may close (or postpone opening) when weather conditions exist making it hazardous for travel. The primary criteria for any decision will be the safety of the staff and the Library patrons. However, maximum effort will be made to maintain regular library operating hours.
If hazardous road conditions occur, the Library Director or her/his designee may contact a member of the Board of Trustees to advise her/him of the situation. If a decision is made by the Director or her/his designee to close or postpone, any or all of these notification methods may be attempted: a voice recording on the Library’s answering machine, a sign on the main entry door, and a notice on the website.
No library fines will be charged for items due on days when the Library is closed or open for only limited hours.
The Library and the Kearsarge Regional School District do not always respond to a weather event in the same way. However, if school is canceled or delayed, the Library Director or Head of Youth Services may cancel children’s programs at the Library that day.
Library staff scheduled to work will be paid for their regularly scheduled hours for the day, or portion of the day, when the Library closes for inclement weather
If the Library remains open but staff members feel they cannot make it into work safely, or if they feel they should leave early due to worsening conditions, they can opt to use either accrued leave or unpaid leave.
If there is not (or will not be) a sufficient number of staff members due to inclement weather conditions or for other legitimate reasons, particularly at night, the Library will be closed. If Town and Library employees or contractors cannot keep Library walkways, driveway and parking lot sufficiently clear, particularly in conditions of ice, freezing rain or heavy snowfall, the Library will be closed.
The Library may close for other reasons at the discretion of the Library Director after consultation with a member of the Board of Trustees. Circumstances that could necessitate this include, but are not limited to, a power outage or a gas leak.
